AMG to GT Concept

AMG to Unveil Four-Door GT Concept

Mercedes-AMG released this sketch of a show car the company will display at the Geneva auto show next week. Although we don’t yet know anything about the car, even from this illustration its most notable feature is clear:

It has four doors. AMG, it would appear, has a case of Porsche Panamera envy. AMG-enhanced Mercedes sedans are nothing new—in fact, they are the basis from which AMG sprung; but AMG’s only exclusive model, the GT and its variants, is offered only as a coupe or convertible.

With the GT concept, the Mercedes in-house go-faster division clearly is exploring a sleek sedan derivative. Or make that a four-door hatchback, as it appears the concept has a rear liftgate rather than a trunk.

But we won’t go crazy examining this drawing for clues, since the car itself will make its debut in just a few days (Tuesday, March 7, to be exact).

It will be interesting to see how the GT Concept looks next to its Zuffenhausen doppelgänger, which is similarly expanding with a new body style of its own: a station wagon, in the shapely form of the new Panamera Sport Turismo.

Four Vanquish Zagatos

One particularly interesting bit regarded the shooting brake, which Nurnberger said, "we sort of started it and then realized to make a really good shooting brake we had to do a lot more engineering." Thus, the long-roof Vanquish actually has a longer wheelbase than the rest of the cars. According to Nunberger, the rear of the car is taken from a modular platform and is essentially a rear of a Rapide that has been added on. Of course, that required total reengineering, retesting, as well as re-crashing to bring it to production......
